Program for Teaching East Asia

The National Consortium for
Teaching about Asia (NCTA)

In 1998, TEA joined with the University of Washington's East Asia Resource Center, Indiana University's Asian Studies Program, Columbia University's East Asia Curriculum Project, and the Five College Center for East Asian Studies to undertake this national, multi-year initiative to encourage and facilitate curriculum improvement in Asian studies at the secondary level. Each year, NCTA supports a minimum of 50 thirty-hour seminars for secondary teachers throughout the country. NCTA's seminar format encourages a community of inquiry among educators who have a responsibility to teach about Asia. Seminar participants receive stipends and materials, a curriculum library for their schools, and the opportunity to apply for continuing study through NCTA-sponsored study tours to China, Japan, or Korea. Over 7000 teachers have participated in NCTA seminars around the country since the start of the program. Teacher alumni are also eligible to apply to NCTA study tours to East Asia each summer.

NCTA Seminars for 2007-08

NCTA begins its tenth year in fall 2007 with funding from the Freeman Foundation. In 2007-2008, the NCTA national coordinating site at the University of Colorado is sponsoring 30-hour seminars in East Asian history and culture for secondary teachers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.
