Using HJ Pad to teach JAWS basics.

HJ Pad is a fully functional word processor complete with spell check. It is an excellent training resource for teachers for several reasons. It offers a "safe" environment to practice typing skills, it is a great program for younger or elderly students to learn how to type, save, and open files.

You will use the file on the enclosed disk called "ATTRIBUTE SAMPLES.RTF" to demonstrate different cursors, as well as how to use screen reading navigation keys.

1. Cursors:

a. PC ñ The one used most often. This is the blinking cursor you use in word processing programs to figure out where you are typing or reading text, as well as menu items that are highlighted.

b. JAWS ñ the regular Mouse cursor.

c. Invisible ñ Non-visible mouse cursor used mostly with scripting, which if it were visible, might cause sighted people confusion if they saw a mouse pointer roaming around, apparently on itís own, in response to a script call or function.

d. Braille ñ Non-visible cursor used with Braille displays to allow a Braille display user the ability to explore the screen without moving either the PC or the Mouse cursor.

e. Virtual ñ Non-visible cursor used to read HTML documents and Web pages.

2. Reading keys. The numeric keypad contains most of the standard reading keys, which are the same for both the PC cursor as well as the other cursors.
