Arts and Humanities Dissertation Fellowships
(including Emerson, Lowe, Reynolds, and Devaney Dissertation Fellowships)
This year CHA, the Graduate School and the College of Arts & Sciences have decided to unify the Dissertation Fellowship Award process for graduate students in Humanities and the Arts. There are three full year dissertation awards - the Devaney, the Emerson and Lowe, and the Reynolds. These awards will all carry the same benefits (50% GPTI stipend, tuition remission for five dissertation hours, fees, and medical insurance); the same conditions will apply to all (no other work is allowed, no other scholarships or fellowships); the same selection criteria (spelled out below) will apply; and there will be one selection committee, suitably representative of the faculty, to rank the applications and make the awards. We will not be asking departments to nominate students or rank their own students. Any student who meets the qualification criteria can nominate himself or herself.

ARTS AND HUMANITIES DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS
- James R., Anne M., and R. Jane Emerson Student Support Fund in the Humanities
- The Florence Husted Lowe and F. Rex Lowe Student Support Fund Dissertation Fellowship in the Humanities
- The Reynolds Dissertation Fellowship
- The Thomas Edwin Devaney Dissertation Fellowship
The purpose of these fellowships is to provide outstanding PhD candidates in the Humanities and the Arts with financial support to assist in the process of completing their doctoral dissertations. All three fellowships will provide full support for one academic year. Each award is the equivalent of a stipend, fees, insurance, and tuition remission (five dissertation hours only) for the academic year. The Regents approve AY 2009-2010 rates in July and the Dean's Office may be contacted after August 1st for exact amounts. Under any of these awards, students may not engage in other forms of paid employment (working, teaching, or off-campus employment) during the time they receive a Dissertation Fellowship. Additionally, students may not take classes outside their dissertation hours nor may they accept another fellowship or grant during the same time period. The purpose of the fellowship is to allow recipients to devote their attention to the dissertation.
ELIGIBILITY
Doctoral students who have been advanced to candidacy (D status) in the following departments and programs of the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to submit an application for a Dissertation Fellowship: Classics, Comparative Literature, English, French and Italian, History, Philosophy, Spanish and Portuguese, and Theatre and Dance. Additionally, doctoral students in the College of Music (D status) are eligible to apply for the Devaney Dissertation Fellowship. Any student who is eligible may submit a nomination.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Selection Committee will base their selection on the following:
- the quality of the research project;
- the quality of the candidate's CV (conference presentations, publications, awards, etc.);
- the probability of completion within the period of the fellowship (the greater the probability, the better chance of receiving a fellowship);
- other teaching-free fellowships that the candidate has already enjoyed (the fewer the better).
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applicants are required to submit the following information to the Fellowship Committee, along with the Application Cover Sheet (Word document):
________ 1. Applicant's Curriculum Vitae and CU transcript.
________ 2. Synopsis of dissertation (maximum 750 words).
________ 3. A timeline for completion of the dissertation (max one page)
________ 4. (i) Information concerning any other research grants, internal or external, for which the applicant has applied. Applicants are also required to inform the Dean of the College if they subsequently receive support for their dissertation research or writing from other agencies; and (ii) information concerning any other support for dissertation writing that the applicant has already been awarded and used.
________ 5. Letter of support: statement of evaluation (maximum 750 words) of the dissertation plans and the likelihood of completion within the fellowship period. This statement, which is to be sent directly to the committee by the author is to be written by: EITHER (a) the dissertation advisor OR (b) another member of the dissertation committee.

The Deadline for submission of all materials is 5:00pm, Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
Applicants will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the Associate Dean for Humanities and the Arts in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and the Director of the Center for Humanities and the Arts. Awardees will be asked to submit a letter notifying the Dean's Office of completion of their dissertation.
