INFORMATION
FOR SPRING 2007 PHI BETA KAPPA INITIATES
I. MEMBERSHIP FORMS:
a. You
must fill out the Registration Form enclosed as an attachment and return it to
the PBK office (mailing address: Alpha Chapter, Phi Beta Kappa, 390 UCB,
Boulder, CO 80309-0390), along with your one-time membership fee of $60 by Thursday March 22, 2007. The form may be submitted instead by email to
pbk@colorado.edu . If you accept our
invitation after this deadline, your certificate will probably not arrive in
time for the Spring 2007 initiation on April 29 at
b. On the Registration form, on the line labeled NAME, please print your name clearly and exactly as you want it to appear on your certificate (which will be ordered by the chapter) and in the initiation program.
c. In order to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa you must also register online with the national office. Completing this online registration process means you are accepting the invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa. It is equivalent to signing your name on a registration card. If you do not complete this process by April 29 you will not officially be a member of Phi Beta Kappa for this semester. Instructions for online registration are as follows:
1. Go to http://www.pbk.org/membership.
2. Click Online New Members above the Login box.
3. Read the introduction, then click here to proceed.
4. Enter your name, chapter, and contact information; click reset (to make corrections) or submit.
5. Check the personal information you entered; click edit or submit.
6. Click MEMBER REGISTRATION.
7. Provide information about your education; click back (to edit) or insert.
8. Click Logout.
II. MEMBERSHIP FEES:
a. Your one-time membership fee of $60.00 covers the cost of a membership certificate, lifetime membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the cost of initiation.
b. Please make checks payable to Phi Beta Kappa. You may also pay in cash.
c. If you are unable to pay the membership fee and wish to declare financial hardship, please contact the chapter office by e-mail at pbk@colorado.edu.
III. INITIATION:
a. Please

b. Initiates will be asked to take the Phi Beta Kappa pledge, in unison, and then chapter officers will give a short history of the Society and of the Alpha Chapter.
c. Each initiate will be introduced as s/he crosses the stage to receive her/his certificate and to learn the secret handshake (!). The initiation ceremony should last less than an hour.
d. Children, spouses/partners, parents and all other family and friends are welcome to attend both the initiation and the reception. No RSVP is necessary. There will also be photo opportunities during the initiation.
e. At the conclusion of the ceremony, members and guests are invited to move to the Glenn Miller lounge for an informal reception.
IV. PHI BETA KAPPA KEYS, CORDS AND PLAQUES:
a. Alpha Chapter will order the certificates for the initiates.
b. Keys, other PBK jewelry and/or plaques may be ordered at the initiate’s expense from Hand and Hammer (www.hand-hammer.com).
c. You may purchase PBK cords to be worn at commencement to demonstrate you membership. These will be available at the initiation for $8.
