In October, 2006, University of Colorado Professor of Philosophy Emerita Hazel E. Barnes was recognized at the triennial meeting of the national Phi Beta Kappa Society for her role in establishing the Visiting Scholars Program, then celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. Professor Barnes served as the first president of the Visiting Scholars Committee beginning in 1956.

In recognition and appreciation of Professor Barnes' distinguished service to Phi Beta Kappa and to the University of Colorado, the chapter officers launched an effort to endow a new undergraduate scholarship fund, the Hazel Barnes Fund, to recognize and inspire excellence among University of Colorado undergraduates.

The fund was opened in spring, 2007, with a $10,000 contribution by the chapter. Professor Barnes herself followed with a generous donation. The first award will be made in spring, 2008.
