PHI BETA KAPPA

ALPHA OF COLORADO

Philosophia Biou Kubernetes

Criteria for Invitation

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest national undergraduate honor society in the United States. The University of Colorado's chapter, the first in the state, was founded in 1904, and the first six members were elected and initiated in spring, 1905. See more on the history of the chapter.

Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is by invitation. At the University of Colorado, invitations are issued twice each year to those undergraduates who meet specified criteria of GPA, undergraduate major in Arts and Sciences, number of credit hours at University of Colorado, and ethical standards. Invitations are normally made in October and February for initiation in December and April each year.

Invitations for Fall, 2007, initiation will be issued in October 2007. Invited students must complete three steps to ensure their initiation on December 2.

Each spring Alpha of Colorado awards one (or two) Crisp Fellowship(s) of $10,000 to a graduating member who has been admitted to a graduate program in arts or sciences.

The chapter is run largely by faculty who were elected to Phi Beta Kappa at their own undergraduate institutions. Chapter meetings are held about once a semester, or as business requires. The chapter president is Robert Schulzinger, Distinguished Professor of History and International Affairs. The secretary/treasurer is Kate Kidder, Department of Physics (390 UCB). The office assistant can be contacted at pbk@colorado.edu. Participation is open to all PBK members living in the Boulder community with an affiliation (which can be created ad hoc) to the University of Colorado. Please contact us if you are a Phi Beta Kappa member who wishes to participate in the local chapter governance or activities.
