University Distinguished Professor Dossier Checklist
Updated 10/09
(Taken from the Provost's "Call for Nominations" memo and the Distinguished Professors' Committee Statement)
ALL MATERIALS MUST BE SENT ELECTRONICALLY VIA E-MAIL IN PDF FORMAT ONLY to Susan Sires (Sires@Colorado.edu). No notebooks are required. Do not submit books or originals of articles, or any additional materials except under special circumstances.
The University Distinguished Professor dossier's contents are to be ordered as follows:
- ___ Recommendation of the Dean (added by the Dean's office)
- ___ Recommendation of Chair and/or Departmental Evaluation. Include standards and measures of excellence used within the field, the nominee's role in grants and publications, and the nominee's standing in his/her area of specialization and in the broader field within which it is situated.
- ___ Curriculum Vitae of the Nominee
- ___ Report of Professional Activities – current year only.
- ___ Assessment of Research or Creative Work: Outside Letters of Support. Six letters are required, with a maximum of eight. Ask referees to describe their relationship to the nominee.
- ___ One-paragraph biographies (not complete CVs) for each external referee. Include in this section the referee/nominee relationship.
- ___ Assessment of Teaching/Teaching Materials/FCQs. Some things to consider including are:
- How many graduate students has the person trained? Where have they found positions?
- How many undergraduate students did the professor have working in the lab (when laboratory research is pertinent)?
- How many undergraduate and graduate students does the person teach in a typical year? What has been the impact of his/her teaching?
- Include no more than six letters addressing teaching.
- ___ Assessment of Service. Include no more than three letters describing service contributions along with any other documentation.
Nominators may also want to consult the descriptive materials that are issued to those preparing dossiers for tenure and/or promotion consideration, available on the web at: http://www.colorado.edu/ArtsSciences/facultystaff/administration/reapptpromoten.html. Those materials contain suggestions on how to build a strong dossier for tenure or promotion, and some of those suggestions also will be pertinent in preparing a case for promotion to University Distinguished Professor.
