CU:

Definition and General Process

Lecturers are faculty who perform teaching duties only. The appointments are for one semester or, occasionally, one academic year at a time. People who are expected to perform service should be appointed as instructors. A more complete description of the difference between instructors and lecturers may be found in the Instructor v. Lecturer Matrix (opens in Word).

For questions regarding lecturers contact Meredith Kroenlein at 303-492-8571 or via e-mail at mk@colorado.edu.

Offer letters are crafted and printed by the program assistant, signed by the chair, and accepted by the candidate, and then sent to Meredith Kroenlein in the Dean's office for the Associate Dean's approval. Attach a resume or curriculum vita to all letters of offer sent to the dean's office, regardless of whether they are for full or part-time appointments. The offer is not official until the Associate Dean has signed. At that point, the original is returned to the department for its records, and a copy is given to the HR Center for entry into PeopleSoft.

NOTE: The background check box in the upper right-hand corner of the letter must be filled out prior to sending the letter for the Associate Dean's signature.

Offers are to be "approved" by the Chancellor prior to the start date of the appointment. For the 2008-09 school year, offer letters must be received in the dean's office no later than August 18, 2008 for the Fall 2008 semester, and January 5, 2009 for Spring 2009. Offer letters not submitted by these deadlines must go through a lengthy retroactive approval process, and staff supervisors will be notified of any retro approvals requested.

NOTE: Summer is separate from academic year appointments and has different requirements. Therefore, letters of offer for summer are EXEMPT from the requirement to include a copy of the vita and/or letters of recommendation. Most of the summer instructors are regular tenure-track or instructor faculty members whose credentials are well known. There may be cases where Dean Nishikawa will request a vita in order to ascertain a person's qualifications.
