Ogilvy Travel Fellowship

The Center for British and Irish Studies is pleased to announce the annual competition for the J.D.A. Ogilvy Graduate Travel Fellowships in British and Irish Studies for 2013-2014. Application Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2013, 5:00pm

Applications are now being accepted for fellowships of up to $4500 to support travel to Britain or Ireland for graduate research and study in any aspect of British and/or Irish Studies. Graduate students working in all departments and colleges at CU-Boulder may apply. Preference will be given to students who need to go to Britain or Ireland to work on a Ph.D. dissertation, but others may apply as well. The proposed travel must take place sometime between the beginning of summer 2013 and the end of summer 2014, and may be of any length. The proposed travel must be taken before the formal granting of the graduate degree and must be for academic purposes only. Please note: This fellowship is for research only and not for conferences.

Complete applications must include the following:

  1. Confidential Letter of Recommendation - Applicants should request a confidential letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member familiar with their work, sent by that faculty member via email attachment to cbisassistant@gmail.com by the due date. Letters should comment on the merits of the proposal and the abilities and potential of the student applicant.
  2. ONE email to cbisassistant@gmail.com with the following items attached. Please include your name in the titles of all attached documents.
    1. The application form (click here to download)
    2. A single document (.doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf) with the following:
      • A project description that includes a careful explanation and justification of why travel to Britain or Ireland is necessary (e.g. what documents the student needs to look at that are unavailable online, in Norlin, or through another library in the area). This must be no longer than 1000 words, double-spaced, with standard margins, in a standard font (such as Times New Roman).
      • A summary of the proposed schedule with dates and places you will visit.
      • A budget listing your expenses (transportation, accommodations, meals).
    3. Your unofficial graduate transcript in .pdf format - Please do not send your transcript separately from your other application materials. Currently enrolled students can download their unofficial transcripts through the myCUinfo student portal (click on the Student tab, then click the "View/Request Transcripts" button). New graduate students (first semester) may also submit copies of transcripts from their previous degree program.

Graduate Student Conference Travel Grants

The Center for British and Irish Studies (CBIS) is pleased to announce the annual competition for Conference Travel Funding for 2012-2013. This opportunity is open to graduate students who have presented or will deliver papers addressing a subject dealing with British, Irish, or Scottish studies, at a conference during the current academic year (August 2012-December 2013). Application Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2013, 5:00pm

Criteria (please read carefully): The awards will be given solely to students who have presented or will be presenting a paper at a conference between August 2012 and December 2013. Awards will NOT be given to someone who has simply attended a conference. Funds will be awarded for up to $500.00.

  1. The paper must be related in some way to the study of British, Scottish, or Irish Studies (simply attending a conference in the UK does not qualify).
  2. Generally speaking, the awarding committee will tend to give preference to students presenting at major national or international conferences (as opposed to local or regional ones), and/or to those whose presentation is related to work on their thesis or dissertation.
  3. All materials must be sent by email to cbisassistant@gmail.com.

  1. Confidential Letter of Recommendation - Applicants should request a confidential letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member familiar with their work, sent by that faculty member via email attachment to cbisassistant@gmail.com by the due date. • A brief description of your paper followed by an explanation of how it fits into your field of specialization and how you anticipate this particular conference will help your research and/or career (please try to be more specific than “I will meet important people in my field”).
