The Karen Raforth Scholarship is awarded to a Graduate or Undergraduate student who best exemplifies commitment, visibility, and effectiveness in quest for gay rights and rights of all marginalized people. The student must be in good academic standing and making appropriate progress toward degree.
The Karen Raforth Scholarship was created to honor Dr. Karen Raforth, a major force in making a climate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people on the Boulder campus a positive and welcoming one. As a University psychologist and assistant director of UCB Counseling Services: A Multicultural Center, Dr. Raforth was instrumental in helping to create and administer many successful ongoing educational and social GLB programs on campus. She was the driving force behind the creation of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Resource Center. She conceived of the Center and its critical role, defined it, described it and argued for it. She was the Center’s first coordinator, agreeing to guide its early activities and to search for and find its first staff director. Dr. Raforth was a charter member of the Boulder Chancellor’s Standing Committee on Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues and a member of the Chancellor’s Task Force that preceded it. In 1995 she received the Margaret Willard Award for Service at UCB. She was selected to participate in the Colorado Academic Management Institute, and in 1996 was chosen to attend the prestigious Management Development Program at Harvard.
