Anthropology Club

The student-organized Anthropology Club offers a number of opportunities, including talks, potluck dinners with faculty and field trips. Upcoming events are posted on the main departmental bulletin board near Hale 350.

Field schools

Students have the opportunity to earn credit while doing fieldwork in archaeology, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology. The Anthropology Department organizes a field school in archaeology every summer which students can participate in by applying for ANTH 4350: Archaeological Field and Laboratory Research. In 2002, 2003, 2004 the field school was in the Southwest (Utah and New Mexico), and from 2005 forward it has been in the Plains. Information on each summer’s field school is generally available in January of that year. Please check with the undergraduate advisor.

Field schools in physical anthropology and cultural anthropology are available through other universities. Please ask the undergraduate advisor for more information.

Research with a faculty sponsor

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) offers students a chance to work alongside a faculty sponsor on original research, and learn to write proposals, conduct research, pursue creative work, analyze data, and present results. For information, call UROP at 303-492-2596 (www.colorado.edu/Research/UROP).

Study Abroad

The experience of studying abroad is invaluable for anthropology majors because first-hand experience abroad provides insights into the culture, history, and human diversity of another country or world region. Students immerse themselves in another culture and learn about it from the perspective of host country instructors. The university offers more than 100 programs throughout the world, all of which qualify for course credit and in some cases also fulfill major requirements. Prior language study or other prerequisites are necessary for some programs, so early planning for study abroad is essential. Further information about study abroad is available from the Office of International Education, which is located on the lower level of the Environmental Design building, at 303-492-7741. (www.colorado.edu/OIE/StudyAbroad).

Internships

Internships furnish students with an academic as well as work experience, and add an important experiential component to their education. Internship study in Anthropology is restricted to majors in their junior and senior years with an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher. Before applying for an internship (ANTH 4930: Anthropology Internship), students need to obtain a faculty sponsor, complete the Department of Anthropology’s application form as well as the College of Arts and Sciences’s Learning Objectives Contract. Complete information is available from the Department of Anthropology Hale 350 or by calling (303) 492-2547.

Teaching Anthropology

Students interested in teaching can often make arrangements to assist a faculty member in teaching a class. Course credit is available by making arrangements with a professor to get credit for ANTH 4910: Teaching Anthropology.

Honors

The Anthropology Department encourages eligible majors (GPA of 3.3 overall and in the major) to graduate with Honors in Anthropology by taking the senior honors seminars (ANTH 4710 and 4720), completing an independent research project and writing an honors thesis. This honors program offers students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty advisor and complete a major research project. If you are interested in exploring this option of graduating with honors, please see the undergraduate advisor.
