  • January 28, 2012 - 7:00PM - Dr. Thomas L. Sever - Hale Science Building, Room 270

Dr. Sever (for years, NASA's only archaeologist) is from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alabama Huntsville. "Space Archeology: Past and Present Human Effects upon Landscapes, Subsistence, and Climate Variability." The use of satellite technology and its ability to see beyond the range of human vision is revolutionizing archeology. Using remote sensing, archeologists can now link the rise and fall of many socities with their landscape modifications and subsequent effects upon their environment. This is a public lecture followed by a reception.

Dr. Allison, from the Department of Anthropology at Duke University, will speak about, "Precarious Japan: A Precarity of Life and Death in Times of Crisis". Coined by activist Amamiya Karin from the Italian autonomist movement, the term "precariat" has come to stand for the un(der)employed and working poor in Japan whose ranks have skyrocketed since the onset of the country's economic decline. Reception to follow.

  • February 16, 2012 - 12:30PM - Dani Merriman - Hale Science Building, Room 450

"Ceramic Traditions in San Vicente de Nicoya, Costa Rica: Tourism, Shifting Lifestyles and the Ethnographic Process of Documenting Change", will be presented by graduate student Dani Merriman. The community of San Vicente de Nicoya, Costa Rica is known for their creation of handmade ceramics from local clays and natural pigments. The future of this art is threatened by weak tourist markets and limited access to raw materials. Based on research between 2008 and 2011, Dani will address the potential effects on members of the community and their ability to document and present their history in a local museum. She will also consider the ethical and epistemological dilemmas of ethnographic research on moments of difficult change.

 

  • January 31, 2012 - 12:30PM - Levi Jacobs - Hale Science Building, Room 450

"Hell, Healing and the Holy Spirit: Rehabilitating Child Soldiers of the Lord's Resistance Army", will be presented by graduate student Levi Jacobs. Between 1987 and 2008, an estimated 30,000 children were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda and forced to fight its guerilla war. Part of their training in the bush included conversion to the army's Christian-inspired belief system. Levi shares some lessons from his preliminary fieldwork and discusses how it changed the direction of his research.

Seeing Spirits is a one-day seminar on the intersection of visuality and spirituality in Asia. This will be a fascinating day of talks concerning contemporary Asian visual culture. Speakers will include renowned scholars of Asian media Mary Steedly (Harvard University), Patricia Spyer (NYU and Leiden), and Karen Strassler (CUNY Queens).
