Dual MA/MBA Program
To support the University’s mission of advancing knowledge across disciplines, and in recognition that business education and training has relevance to many academic fields, the Leeds School of Business and the Department of Anthropology endorse a dual degree program in which both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Anthropology be awarded to those students who satisfy the requirements of the respective programs.
Admission to the Dual Degree Program
- Students must apply to and meet the application requirements for each program separately.
- Students must meet the admissions standards for each program separately.
- Dual degree students may start either program first; however, in the first year of the dual degree program, courses are taken in one of the two departments exclusively, and in the second year, courses are taken in the other department exclusively.
Description of Curriculum
- In preparation for the quantitative nature of the MBA program, Anthropology students lacking a quantitative background are strongly advised to enroll in the following courses:
For preparation in math: MATH 1001 and MATH1300; or ECON 1078 and ECON 1088
For preparation in statistics: BCOR 2010, or ECON 3818, or ANTH 5000
- If a dual degree student starts in the Anthropology department, he or she will enroll in a full load of Anthropology courses during his or her first year in the program, as described below:
- The required first year course for all graduate
students:
- ANTH 5770 Core Course in Archaeology
- ANTH 5780 Core Course in Cultural Anthropology
- ANTH 5790 Core Course in Biological Anthropology
- ANTH 5000 Quantitative Methods
- Specific additional requirements, depending upon the student’s subdiscipline, to be at least partially met in the first year, the remainder to be completed in the third or fourth year.
Archaeology:
ANTH 5340 Archaeological Method & Theory,
ANTH 5390 Archaeological Research
Methods I,
ANTH 5400 Archaeological Research Methods
II,
ANTH 7140 Public Archaeology, plus
a required MA Thesis (6 hrs.).
Cultural Anthropology:
ANTH 7010 Contemporary Theory,
ANTH 7300 Research Methods in Cultural
Anthropology, one ethnographic area course or
independent study, plus three elective cultural anthropology
courses at the 5000 level or above for non-thesis
option students. Thesis option students
must complete one or two such electives plus
an MA thesis of 4-6 credit hours.
Biological Anthropology:
18 hrs (6 courses) in graduate-level
biological anthropology courses and in consultation
with their advisor, other courses in related
disciplines. MA thesis is expected.
- Dual degree students who start in the Anthropology department will enroll in the following MBA courses during the second year in the program:
- Quantitative Methods
- Organizational Behavior
- Economics
- Business Policy and Strategy
- Marketing
- Finance
- Accounting
- Operations
- Two business electives
- If a dual degree student starts his or her first year in the business school, steps two and three above are reversed.
- A dual degree student will enroll in a combination of Anthropology and MBA courses during his or her third and fourth years in the dual degree program, as described below:
- Of the 21 second-year MBA elective hours required, 12 hours of B (3.0) or better coursework in the department of Anthropology may be counted toward the 51 credit hours required to earn an MBA. Thus, the business curriculum for dual degree students will consist of 43 hours of MBA coursework.
- One MBA course at the 5000 level or above dealing with cultural, anthropological or ethnographic approaches may be substituted for an elective course in the Anthropology MA program.
- All remaining coursework required for the MA in Anthropology will be taken during the third or fourth year.
Graduation Requirements
- Dual degree students will be required to complete 43 hours of MBA coursework and 30 hours of Anthropology coursework (3 hours of which may be an approved elective in the MBA program).
- Both degrees must be awarded simultaneously.
- Dual degree students must maintain the academic and ethical standards required of both schools. Students in good standing in one school, but not the other, may be allowed to continue in the school in which they are in good standing.
- Students who co not complete the dual degree program requirements (i.e., who withdraw for any reason from one of the two programs) will be required to meet the full requirements of the remaining program in which they are enrolled.
