CU student life chief selectedFormer UT El Paso dean will take over May 29, 2008
The University of Colorado announced Wednesday that it has chosen the dean of students at the University of Texas at El Paso to be its next chief of student life.
Julie Wong will take the vice chancellor for student affairs post July 22. She will earn $183,000 a year, according to university officials.
Top CU leaders said they were impressed by her leadership skills, vision and experience boosting student success.
Wong will report to the chancellor through Provost Phil DiStefano. The position oversees more than 30 departments, including admissions, financial aid, the registrar's office, judicial affairs, alcohol and other drug programs, counseling and psychological services.
Wong holds a bachelor's degree in recreation and leisure studies from San Jose State University; a master of arts in college and university administration from Michigan State University; and a Ph.D. in educational policy, planning and administration from the University of Southern California.
Wong, in an interview Wednesday, said she wants CU graduates to be civic-minded and prepared for an increasingly global economy.
"I'm a really great visionary and collaborator," Wong said. "One of the things I do really well is bring different groups together. I'm a grass-roots kind of person. I like to get everybody's input."
The position is being vacated by Ron Stump, who has had administrative roles with the university for more than a decade.
He will continue his role as interim director of the Alumni Association.
Earlier this year, the Alumni Association was transferred from the CU Foundation to the university to allow for better collaboration between alumni and the school, according to CU officials.
The other finalists who were vying for the vice chancellor post were Deb Coffin, assistant vice chancellor for CU's student affairs and executive director of Housing and Dining Services; Todd Holcomb, associate vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University; Christopher A. Payne, associate vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Melvin Cleveland Terrell, vice president for student affairs at Northeastern Illinois University.
