Charge to the CU101 Task Force

10 August 2005

The general purpose of this CU101 Task Force is to provide an evaluation of the potential benefits and costs of creating a new campus-wide program to be focused on helping first year students better understand how to be more successful and better campus citizens.  In particular, I ask that you evaluate how such a program could improve the general campus climate among students with respect to several problem areas

 (1)  Should the campus design and implement a formal course or program aimed to better educate our students regarding issues of harassment, discrimination, academic and personal integrity, sexual orientation,  substance abuse and thriving in a multi-cultural academic environment?

(2)  What type of financial investment would such a recommended program entail?  Please provide best, middle, and lowest cost budget models which would likely be effective in furthering the aim of substantially improving the campus climate among students in these areas of concern.

(3)   Please provide recommendations for purview, content, staffing, and implementation elements such as for ‘credit‘ or ‘not for credit’, ‘required’ or ‘not required’, number of hours to be invested, etc.

(4)  I request you consult with all interested parties in your deliberations as best you can and provide your recommendations before the end of November, 2005.

Please address at least these items plus any others you determine are directly relevant to such a potential new program.
