Professor Limerick was recognized for her work in the field of history by receiving the coveted MacArthur Fellowship in 1995. She was one of the founders of the "new western history" revisioned the American West. Limerick's book "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West (New York: W. W. Norton & Co., 1987)" had a pronounced impact on how historians look at the American West. Limerick is a co-founder and serves as chair of the Center of the American West. Patty Limerick teaches popular American History survey courses at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
