Tsaparang  (Ngari)

  Date? Source: Ngari

Tsaparang was once the capitol of the Guge kingdom that lasted until 1630.  It was the site of two particular chapels – the Lhakhang Marpo (Red Chapel) and the Lhakhang Karpo (White chapel).  Both were built around 1470 and 1500, respectively.  The Lkahkang Karpo, is recognized as one of the richest monasteries of Western Tibet, artistically speaking.  Despite much destruction of the statues and murals in both chapels by Red Guards of the Cultural Revolution, there are still several surviving murals and paintings that survived.  Also at the Tsaparang site are several other cave chapels and small neighbor chapels.
