Tangboche

In the 11th century,  the abbot of Tangboche invited Atisha to live in the monastery in a small hermitage now known as the Atish Chapel.  Two relics of his visit, a statue and a set of 12 texts brought by him from India were preserved by the monastery, however they were lost during the Cultural Revolution.  The lama of the monastery, Jampa Kelsang, currently lives in Germany.  It is the residence of 33 monks.
