Captain Kendel

Captain Richard Kendel was a graduate of Detachment 105 and the University of Colorado. Kendel would prove to be an active member of AFROTC and an outstanding student. He would not only excel in school and AFROTC but, also strengthen his leadership skills by joining organizations such as Arnold Air Society. Eventually, his hard work and dedication would pay off and Kendel would categorize as a pilot and graduate with a bachelors degree in Aerospace Science and Engineering in 1976.

After commissioning, Kendel, would make his way through UPT, at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. Once completing UPT, in 1978, he was sent to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas to continue his career. Kendel would become qualified as a T-37 instructor and recieve the Air Force Commendation Medal during his time at Randolph for his outstanding dedication. He would then proceed to Maxwell AFB, in the summer of 1981, to complete Squadron Officer School and, once graduating from the institution, would resume his flying career and move on to become one of the first F-15 Eagle pilots. The F-15 was considered the greatest air to air combat fighter in the world, at the time, and being selected to fly it was definently a true testement to Kendel's great work ethic. In 1982, after intense training, he would be officially recognized as an "Eagle Driver." Kendel would then join the 53rd TFS in Germany for continual training. During these exercises Capt Kendel would be tragically killed in a mid-air collision over Germany in 1983.

On that fateful day we lost one of our own and will always remember the legacy and sacrifices of Capt Kendel. He was an outstanding example of what a good officer should entail and his constant pursuit of excellence will always be remembered here at Detachment 105. The memory of his sacrifices and his willingness to serve our country will never be forgotten.
